Dr Michalis Feretis
Dr Feretis studied Medicine in the UK and qualified with a Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB, University of Aberdeen) in 2007. He completed his two-year hospital internship appointments (foundation training) in Scotland and subsequently moved to the north of England for a two-year basic surgical training rotation (Yorkshire and Humber deanery). Upon completion of his basic surgical rotations, he secured a place in the highly competitive six-year National Training Programme for General Surgery in East of England (Training Number: EAN/021/00135C).
During his training period, he developed a subspecialty interest in pancreatic, liver and transplant surgery and was offered a training post at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, for three years. During this period he was affiliated with the Cancer Research Institute (CRUK) in Cambridge, conducting basic science research on the tumour immune properties of pancreatic cancer. His research work was funded by a grant from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2022, he was admitted to the UK specialist register as a General Surgeon after being awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Following the completion of his higher surgical training, he pursued further sub-specialty fellowships in advanced pancreatic, liver and liver transplant surgery in major hepatobiliary centres in Basingstoke, UK, and at the internationally renowned Liver Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, one of the largest hepatobiliary centres in Europe.
In his clinical practice, he manages patients with the full spectrum of pancreatic diseases (including pancreatic cancer, pancreatic cysts, neuroendocrine tumours and pancreatitis) as well as liver-related conditions (such as liver metastases, primary liver cancers, liver cysts, bile duct cancers and surgical complications related to liver transplantation). He performs major liver and pancreatic surgery using laparoscopic techniques when appropriate. He also treats patients with general surgery conditions including gallstones, abdominal wall hernias, bowel conditions and soft tissue lumps.
