ACCIDENT AND
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The Accident and Emergency Department of Ygia Polyclinic, has been integrated into the National Health System (GESY) since September 25, 2023 and offers its services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

​

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and is staffed by 16 Emergency Physicians and Pathologists, as well as paramedical and nursing staff with extensive experience and specialization in treating severely ill patients, musculoskeletal injuries, polytrauma cases, children and other cases requiring immediate healthcare and therapeutic interventions within minutes.

The medical team in the Emergency Department is complemented by 110 Collaborating Physicians from the following specialties, who are on duty daily:

The role of the Emergency Department can be summarized as follows:

  • Provides Emergency Medical and Nursing care to individuals requiring urgent medical attention 24/7, 365 days a year.

  • Evaluates whether referral to other specialties by Specialists or hospitalization of the patient is necessary.

  • Has a Short-Stay Unit, capable of accommodating patients for treatment or investigation of their symptoms.

  • Is able to cope with a large number of cases and different specialties.

CASES CONSIDERED EMERGENCIES AND REQUIRING A VISIT TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT INCLUDE:

​

  • Fainting, dizziness, weakness

  • Feeling of confusion

  • Visual disturbance

  • Shortness of breath, chest pain

  • External bleeding that continues beyond ten minutes

  • Seizures

  • Sudden speech or movement disorder

  • Severe burns

  • Serious injury

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Stroke

  • Convulsions

  • Child injury

  • Child with severe gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting)

  • Febrile child with drowsiness or rash

  • Cases of abuse

  • Child with persistent fever above 38 or infant with fever above 38

OPERATION MODE OF THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AND PATIENT CARE SERVICES

At the Emergency Department of Ygia Polyclinic, a triage system is implemented, which involves the classification of cases according to their severity. Triage is conducted by experienced and specially trained nursing staff to assess the severity of each case, thus determining the time for its management. Cases evaluated as non-urgent, meaning not life-threatening (Categories 3 and 4), are informed accordingly by the nursing staff and may experience longer waiting times compared to urgent cases (Categories 1 and 2), where life is at risk. Cases that are not considered urgent (Category 5) are encouraged to visit their Personal Physician or the corresponding Specialty Doctor to avoid congestion in the Emergency Department.
