Dr Markella Markou
Dr. Markella Markou is a specialized Neurologist with many years of clinical experience in Germany, providing comprehensive care across the full spectrum of neurological disorders with scientific excellence and a modern clinical approach. She holds subspecialty training in Neurological Rehabilitation (AEKNO) and Neurophysiology and possesses official certifications from the German Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (DGKN).
She performs electromyography (EMG), electroneurography (ENG), evoked potentials, and other specialized neurophysiological examinations. Dr. Markou is a certified medical expert in neurological disorders by the German Society of Neurological Expert Assessment (DGNB) and for several years served as a consulting neurologist for German public and private insurance institutions, specializing in the evaluation and recognition of disability of neurological origin.
Her scientific interests also extend to intraoperative neuromonitoring. Following specialized training in Germany (DGKN), she supervises awake brain surgeries and performs intraoperative neuromonitoring during brain and spinal cord surgeries.
She holds a PhD from the University of Bonn with the dissertation entitled:
“Factors of influence upon clinical and radiological course of patients with traumatic intracerebral bleeding”,
and has authored a large number of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals (PubMed).
From 2018 to 2024, she served as Senior Consultant (Chief Physician) at the academic hospital BG Klinikum Duisburg in Germany, where she was responsible for the management of the neurological rehabilitation department as well as for the training of resident physicians.
She completed her specialty training in Neurology at Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen, Germany, under the direction of Professor Berlit, current Secretary General of the German Society of Neurology. The hospital is a reference center for CNS vasculitis, stroke in young patients, and multiple sclerosis. After completing her specialization, she worked at the same hospital in the Stroke Unit and in the Multiple Sclerosis outpatient clinic.
In addition, she worked at the Godeshöhe Neurological Rehabilitation Center in Bonn, Germany, where she acquired the skills and second subspecialty qualification in Neurological Rehabilitation.
She completed her medical studies on a scholarship at the University of Ioannina, graduating with honors (“Very Good”).
Currently, she practices as a Neurologist at the Athens Medical Center (Marousi) and also maintains a medical office in Cyprus, being an associate of Ygia Polyclinic.
Dr. Markou is registered with the General Healthcare System (GESY).
